We are delighted to have coach Bernie Cassell running our travel team skills clinics again this season.
Coach Bernie Cassell brings with him a wealth of hockey coaching and skill instruction. From 2003-2008 Bernie was a member of the New York Islanders organization. From 2003- 2006 he was the organization’s skating and skills coach. During that time, he was an on ice coach for three New York Islander rookie camps, two New York Islander (National Hockey League) training camps and five Bridgeport Sound Tiger (American Hockey League) training camps.
From 2006-2008 Bernie was an assistant coach for the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, the top minor league affiliate of the New York Islanders. As an assistant, Bernie was responsible for the implementation of the team’s systems, video analysis, scouting and pre-scouting of opposing teams, designing and running team practices, skating and skill development and split duties behind the bench and as an eye-in-the sky during games. During this time, Bernie was also involved with youth hockey endeavors for both the New York Islanders and Bridgeport Sound Tigers. He appeared in many outreach programs for the organization growing the game at all youth levels. He also participated in summer youth hockey camps and clinics as an on ice instructor.
As a player, Bernie starred at Cushing Academy (New England Prep League) and Elmira College (NCAA) where he earned all-American honors and went on to play minor league professional hockey before turning his attention to coaching. He was an assistant coach at Connecticut College (NCAA) where he earned a Master’s Degree in Education. Bernie also spent a season as the interim women’s head coach at Connecticut College (NCAA). He later went on to become head coach at the Junior level (USA Hockey) with the Connecticut based, Norwich Icebreakers. During his time in Norwich, Bernie was also the coaching director for Southeastern Connecticut Youth Hockey and ran the Learn To Play Hockey program at the Norwich Municipal Ice Rink.
As a coach/instructor, Bernie has traveled the world working with teams at all levels of hockey. He has worked with all levels of USA sanctioned youth hockey from Learn To Play Hockey through Junior, Major Junior (Canadian Hockey League), NCAA Division 1 and Division 3, North American Minor Professional, European Elite Professional, and the National Hockey League.
